Cat Chat with Ghulam Mohammad & Dr. Shafqat Hussain of the Baltistan Wildlife Conservation & Development Organization – Giving Communities a Voice: An anthropological perspective of conservation
Ghulam Mohammad, chief executive officer of the BWCDO, and Dr. Shafqat Hussain, professor of anthropology at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, founder of Project Snow Leopard and board chair of the BWCDO are our special guests for this edition of Conservation Cat Chat. They are joined by host Shavaun Kidd, Director Dr. Rodney Jackson, and Vice President Ashleigh Lutz-Nelson of the Conservancy.
The Baltistan Wildlife Conservation and Education Organization (BWCDO), formerly recognized as Project Snow Leopard (PSL), is a non-profit organization that has been working in Baltistan since 1999. Its efforts are directed toward the harmonious coexistence between humans & snow leopards. The BWCDO has established livestock compensation schemes to offset losses from depredation, continues to predator proof communal livestock corrals, monitors the snow leopard population through genetic analysis and camera trapping, and conducts awareness-raising activites and conservation education for schools and communities at large.
In this chat, Director Mohammad explores the BWCDO’s various projects and their continued success while Dr. Hussain takes a look at snow leopard conservation from the social science perspective. He emphasizes that humans and wildlife share the landscape so conservation efforts should address the needs of both.
