Community-led conservation continued to gain momentum across Nepal's high mountain landscapes in 2025 through the work of Upper Karnali Landscape Initiatives (UKALI), led by founder Rinzin Phunjok Lama, in partnership with Snow Leopard Conservancy. Since we last reported on their lifesaving work, UKALI has strengthened their institutional capacity, expanded biodiversity research and monitoring, invested in sustainable livelihood development, created conservation education and skill building courses, and advanced their communication and outreach.
Over the past year, Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC) strengthened conservation efforts in western Mongolia through a partnership with Wildlife Initiative (WLI) and local herding communities in the Sutai–Myang Ugalzad Ecological Corridor. This project, led by WLI Executive Director, Dr. Claudio Augugliaro, represents one of the most intensive human–snow leopard coexistence monitoring systems in the region.
Recognizing the power of personal stories to educate, inspire, and mobilize the next generation of conservation leaders, the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) launched a global storytelling initiative that has culminated in the publication of Herding Big Cats: Stories of Conservation, Collaboration, and Hope.
Late last year, the Snow Leopard Conservancy announced a new partnership with Zoologist Kartik Thevar, the Himalayan Zookeeper Project, which bridges rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care. This program is an ambitious initiative designed to strengthen animal welfare, behavioral management, and rewilding conservation outcomes for Himalayan wildlife in human care.
This spring, Snow Leopard Conservancy and its partners International Veterinary Outreach and Animal Nepal continued expanding the impact of the One Health – One Welfare initiative, a program founded on the idea that the condition of humans, animals, and ecosystems are deeply interconnected.
"Snow Leopard Sisters" continues its upward momentum as Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way comes on as Executive Producer. The film has received multiple festival honors and audience awards while showcasing Snow Leopard Conservancy’s partner work in Dolpo, Nepal and raising global awareness for snow leopard conservation efforts.
To improve animal health services, Dr. Sajana Thapa of Animal Nepal, organized a vaccination clinic in three rural municipalities of Manang, Nepal, to address the growing feral and free roaming dog populations. The team provided training for local veterinarians and animal health technicians on best practices for canine health care and performed equine health evaluations.
On the "Saving Wildlife with Sam" podcast, Ashleigh Lutz-Nelson of the Snow Leopard Conservancy explains how conservation in Nepal depends on community-led solutions. From predator-proof corrals to livestock programs, she shows how reducing human-wildlife conflict protects both people and snow leopards while highlighting conservation’s challenges and hope.

The Snow Leopard Conservancy is proud to be the impact partner for the feature documentary, Snow Leopard Sisters, featuring the work of our longstanding local partner Tshiring Lhamu Lama and her ground-breaking conservation efforts to preserve the snow leopard population in her home district of Dolpo, Nepal. We are working together to reduce retaliatory killings through local education programming, construction of predator-proof corrals, and establishing a green local economy enmeshed with snow leopard conservation.

Art & Poetry Contests
Each year, the Snow Leopard Conservancy holds an Artwork & Poetry Contest with the hope that these creative works will be instrumental in helping us to develop awareness of the snow leopard and foster an understanding not only of its importance to the high mountain ecosystem but also its value to local communities as both a cultural and spiritual icon.
