Safeguarding livelihoods and snow leopards in Dolpo

In the Dolpo region of Nepal, livelihoods depend on livestock; however, poorly constructed corrals invite snow leopard attacks. Faced with losses, some herders retaliate against these already vulnerable cats.

Partner Tshiring Lhamu Lama is addressing this challenge by building predator-proof enclosures to protect livestock and end retaliatory killings.

Taking ownership of the corral, the community formed a new herding co-op to manage repairs and pool funds for future improvements. Most importantly, they committed to ending retaliatory killings of snow leopards, marking a significant shift in attitudes.

Tshiring’s plans for the future include expanding this successful model to 11 more villages in Dolpo, building a pathway to coexistence between people and wildlife.
