Supporting Community-Led Conservation in Bhutan’s Jigme Dorji National Park
We are excited to announce an expansion of our conservation efforts through reigniting our partnership with the Bhutan Foundation. In 2026, we will sponsor “Promoting Ecological and Community Engagement” (PEaCE). This project brings our mission to protect snow leopards and support local communities to the highlands of Bhutan.
Operating in Bhutan’s Jigme Dorji National Park, PEaCE addresses the complex challenges facing both snow leopards and the communities that share their alpine habitat. The project tackles human-wildlife conflict through practical solutions such as improved livestock corrals, conflict hotspot mapping, and training for herders. Simultaneously, the initiative creates new economic opportunities through alternative livelihoods, including medicinal plant processing, climate-resilient agriculture, and nature-based tourism that reduces pressure on local ecosystems.

Community-Led Conservation
Central to PEaCE is a commitment to community-led conservation. Through awareness programs and training, the project builds local conservation stewardship while strengthening wildlife monitoring capabilities. This approach ensures that protection efforts are sustainable and community-owned. PEaCE will directly benefit 358 yak-herding households, reduce livestock losses, enhance sustainable livelihoods of yak herders, and foster positive attitudes toward conservation. By combining ecological protection with socio-economic incentives, the project will create a sustainable model for coexistence. It will ensure the long-term survival of snow leopards while improving the well-being of highland communities in Bhutan.
This initiative represents exactly the kind of impactful, community-centered conservation work SLC is proud to support. We are eager to partner with such a fantastic organization as the Bhutan Foundation in advancing these critical efforts.
Jomolhari Mountain Festival
SLC and Bhutan Foundation have a long history of partnership, supporting the establishment of the Jomolhari Mountain Festival near Jigme Dorje National Park. Known to locals as the “Snow Leopard Festival,” the community now organizes the annual event. The festival benefits the region, drawing ecotourists who are interested in the awe-inspiring natural wonders of Mt. Jomolhari and the rich cultural heritage of neighboring villages. Stay tuned for more opportunities to get involved and travel to Jigme Dorji National Park to participate in the festival!
