Study sites are those where the threats to biodiversity are clear, where the local community
expresses the desire to work with the Snow Leopard Conservancy, where there are high livestock loss rates, good snow leopard
habitat, and regionally significant biological values. We are assessing which conservation actions are most effective in
reducing loss of livestock to snow leopards, while also fostering strong stewardship ethics in the community. To do this,
we are using various approaches, with success indicators identified at each site. These will be compared to sites where no
action is taken. We are especially interested in determining how local peoples’ attitudes to snow leopards and the
presence of a national park changes when they begin to benefit from the presence of the endangered snow leopard –
rather than seeing it as a liability or a predator that must be eliminated.
